Dr Zubaida Rahman, wife of Senior Vice Chairman of BNP Tarique Rahman, has decided not to become active in politics right now, and turned down such proposals twice, confirmed several sources inside the party.

Requesting anonymity, a member of standing committee of the party said, during the last Ramadan, several party leaders including the BNP chairperson's adviser urged Zubaida Rahman to join politics actively. Their point was that someone needs to voice BNP's concerns on behalf of the party as Tarique Rahman cannot return to the country now and also because Khaleda Zia is getting older.

Those BNP leaders said Zubaida Rahman has an acceptable and popular image at the root level, especially after she was praised by the think tank of the party for her patient advices during the 1/11 crises.

Turning down the proposals to join politics, she said she is totally an academic person and she is mainly interested in study, research and practicing medicine. Right now, she is not interested in politics, but if time demands, that might be a different matter.

When asked, BNP's standing committee member Jamir Uddin Sircar told poriborton.com, that Khaleda Zia will appoint people in the empty posts in the standing committee of the party after she returns from London.

Acknowledging the ongoing initiatives to bring Ms Rahman to politics, he said, "She definitely has a very good image at the root level, but he difficulty is that nothing can be done before she returns to the country. Questions will raise, if she is appointed in a post before returning to the country."

Another standing committee member of BNP Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain said, "There had been no discussion Khaleda Zia regarding bringing Zubaida Rahman into politics."

Two posts were left vacant when the new 19-membered standing committee of BNP was announced by Khaleda Zia last year. Speculations regarding Tarique Rahman and Arafat Rahman's wives appointment in those posts are continuing since then.
