Gano Forum on Sunday proposed forming a five-member search committee to scrutinise the 'qualifications' for the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners.

The party came up with the proposal at a meeting with President Abdul Hamid over the formation of a new EC.

Gano Forum President Dr Kamal Hossain led the party's 14-member delegation in the discussion held at the Darbar Hall of Bangabhaban.

During the 45-minute meeting, the party placed a nine-point proposal over the formation of a search committee and the new EC.

The proposals include enacting a law as per the constitution to appoint election commissioners and ensuring financial freedom of the EC.

The discussion initiative taken by the President is a positive step for democracy, the Gano Forum delegation said adding that solution to any problem is possible through discussions.

They hoped that President Abdul Hamid will be able to form a strong EC by taking right decisions in due time.

Gano Forum leaders said it is not possible to hold acceptable polls without forming an independent, strong and neutral EC.

Abdul Hamid said there is no alternative to develop the culture of tolerance among political parties to hold fair polls and hoped the political parties will put in effort in this regard.

Secretaries concerned to the President Office were present.

The President initiated the formal talks with political parties about the EC formation with holding discussions with BNP on December 18 last year.

He took the dialogue initiative as the tenure of the current Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad-led EC expires in February.

Secretaries concerned to the President Office were present.
