A fire broke out at a house in Badda in the city early Sunday killing a woman and injuring her two children, police and hospital sources said. Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Badda police station Kazi Wazed Ali told reporters that the deceased was identified as Jesmin Begum, 35, and the injured were her son Mohammad Amanullah, 11, and daughter Sanjida Begum, 8.
The OC said the fire originated at a furniture shop of a tin-shed house at Boithakhali of East Badda around 3:30 am and subsequently engulfed the entire house when residents of the house were sleeping. Jesmin and her two children received burn injury.
They were sent to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) where doctors declared Jesmin dead around 4:30am, said a hospital source, adding that the injured were undergoing treatment there.
Officials of Fire Service and Civil Defence said four firefighting units rushed in and brought the fire under control after one-hour frantic efforts.
The officials said the blaze originated from an electric short circuit, but police said an investigation is going on in this connection.
